An in-depth and practical examination of the role of color in painting, from selecting and arranging palettes to the effects of paint layering. Explore color mixing strategies, color interactions, and perceptual influences, through instructor demonstrations. A broad overview of color theory will give you a foundation for mixing color and selecting your palette.

What you will learn:
1. How complimentary colors interact through juxtaposition, mixing, or layering.
2. How color temperatures work, and what they are based on in nature.
3. Effects of atmosphere, time of year, and time of day on color.
4. Color use in either abstract or realistic painting.

  • This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class.

    You will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.

  • A set of the following colors all in oil, or all in acrylic, depending on which medium you choose to work with:

  • • Titanium White
  • • Yellow Ochre
  • • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • • Cadmium Red Medium
  • • Burnt Sienna
  • • Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone
  • • Cerulean Blue
  • • French Ultramarine Blue
  • • Viridian
  • • Burnt Umber
  • • Ivory Black

  • • 2 metal clip-on cups for medium (oil painters)
  • • 1 plastic quart-size container such as from large yogurt (acrylic painters)

  • • Gessoed canvas, gesso board, or gessoed canvas pad, small to medium size
  • • Palette Knife

  • • Brushes: bristle brushes for oil painters (#10 flat, #4 round)
  • • Synthetic brushes for acrylic painters (#10 flat, #4 round)
  • • A #2 nylon round for both

  • • Disposable White Palette Paper

  • • Paper towels

  • • Odorless Turpenoid (for oil painters)
  • • Refined linseed oil (for oil painters)

  • • Water (for acrylic painters)
  • • Retarder for acrylic paint (optional)
