Ready to take your jewelry to the next level? Learn to embellish your pieces with a variety of stone setting styles in this five-week workshop. Understand the techniques behind fabricating the stone settings, including measuring stones and translating them to the metal to be made into settings. Topics covered will include bezel settings with round, oval or fancy shaped cabochon cut gems, a step bezel for faceted cut gemstones (combination bezel and prong setting) and a tube setting (bezel setting for faceted cut gemstones). Depending on students experience, additional setting techniques will be covered which could include flush setting and prong setting.

What you will learn:
1. Measuring stones for settings
2. Fabricating stone settings out of metal
3. Variety of stone setting styles
4. Settings for alternative materials like wood or paper

Please note: this is a 5-session course. Fleisher will be closed on January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

  • Students will receive a materials list one week prior to class with specific catalog numbers if purchasing supplies online.

  • • Pencils for drawing and design work
  • • 2 dozen 3/0 saw blades
  • • 1 foot each, hard, medium, and easy silver wire solder
  • • 1 sheet each, 320, 400, and 600 grit silicone carbide wet/dry sandpaper
  • • 3 paint sticks
  • • Sketch pad
  • • Tracing paper
  • • 1/4 inch x 6 inches fine silver bezel wire
  • • 1 inch x 3 inches 20 guage sterling silver sheet
  • • 3 inches 16 guage sterling silver round wire
  • • 1 Cabochon cut gemstone that is at least 3/4 inch in the smallest dimension. Beginners should use a cabochon that is either round or oval in outer shape. Intermediate and advanced students can use stones that are organic, or fancy shaped cabochons (pear shaped, marquise, square etc.)
  • • 1 Fancy cut faceted gemstone that is at least ½ inch in the smallest dimension. Beginners should use a shape that is either round or oval in outer shape. Intermediate and advanced students can use stones that are fancy shaped (pear shaped, marquise, square etc.)
  • • 1 faceted gemstone that is 5mm round.
  • • 3 inches sterling thick wall tubing with minimum outer diameter of 5.5mm and an maximum inner diameter of 4.5 OR 3 inches regular thickness sterling silver tubing with an inner diameter of 5mm and 3 inches sterling silver tubing with outer diameter of 5mm.
