This class will introduce you to basic theories, principals, and techniques to successfully draw the figure. It is aimed for those students who are interested in examining the traditional approach in figure drawing from life. You will discover a wide range of specific ideas and skills necessary to depict the body and its surrounding in a realistic manner. Topics covered include three-dimensional visualization and how it relates two-dimensions, development of spatial imagination, proportion, tonal relationships, depth, volume, environment, space and strong composition.

What you will learn:
1. The basics of the human body’s anatomy for artists
2. Principles of traditional realistic imaging
3. Various drawing techniques and materials
4. A traditional approach to design an idea in drawing

Participants must have a valid Fleisher membership.

  • This is an in-person class which will take place in our building with strict social distancing protocols and reduced student capacity. Please see our COVID-19 community safety policies.
  • Start the term with these supplies:
  • • Drawing paper (at least 163-270 g / m3; 18 "x 24")
  • • Graphite pencils ( 3b, 5b, 8b)
  • • Hard eraser
  • • Kneaded eraser
  • • Knife (Pencil sharpener)
  • • Sandpaper pads

    Midway through the term students will need these supplies:
    - Drawing paper (at least 163-270 g / m3; 18 "x 24")

  • • Water soluble graphite (4b-8b) (optional)
  • • Conte Pierre Noir (optional)
  • • Soft vine charcoal (optional)

  • • Knife (Pencil sharpener)
  • • Sandpaper pads

Lara Cantu-Hertzler is a Philadelphia painter who is inspired by architecture and the figure. She explores themes of urban decay and feminine identity. Lara’s influences include: classical art, dance, photography, abstract expressionism and impressionism. In 2008 Lara graduated from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts graduating with a Certificate in painting. In 2014 Lara received a full fellowship to Vermont Studio Center. Lara’s had solo shows at: Allens Lane Art Center, Abington Art Center, and High Wire Gallery. She’s also exhibited her work at Rittenhouse Square, and Rosenfeld Gallery. Lara has won numerous awards from The Philadelphia Sketch club, and The Philadelphia National Arts Program.
