This workshop will introduce you to the wide, wide, world of dye and will incorporate dye resist methods. This experience will give you the full scope from preparing and mordanting your fabric to a finished piece. Using MX Dye (fiber reactive dye), we will be exploring experimental methods of painting with liquid dye, thickening dye, and resisting. Towards the second half of the workshop we will be exploring printing patterns using thickened mx dye to create deconstructed silkscreens. Deconstructed silkscreening is the process of creating a textured rubbing on a silkscreen or drawing directly onto the screen and creating monoprints on your work surface. Playing with color and learning how to work in layers will be a big focus and conversation throughout this class. We will be integrating the fabrics we create into a collection of fabric collages. 

What you will learn in this course:
1. Dyeing with MX Dye
2. Resist techniques
3. How to build up layers of texture and patterns
4. Using a silkscreen to create a dye monoprint
5. Composition

  • This is an in-person class which will take place in our building with strict social distancing protocols and reduced student capacity. Please see our COVID-19 community safety policies.
  • • Brushes, big and small
  • • An apron if you would like to keep your clothes clean or clothing you don't mind permanently staining
  • • Latex or rubber gloves
  • • A bucket
  • • Flat textural objects from around the house (i.e. rubber dish mats lace, left over screen bags from vegetables. Get creative!)
  • • A sketchbook & pen or pencil
