Join us for a conversation about the nuances and challenges of being a career artist. Tom Judd will explore the accepted notions and myths about being an artist, the history and present day challenges. Tom will relay his own story and review his career from art school going forward touching on the impactful moments, lessons and people that made a difference in his career. He will also review the different elements that need to be in place to support and nurture an art career.

Tom Judd graduated from then PCA in 1975 with a BFA in painting. He had no interest in graduate school and was anxious to get on with being an artist and making that what he does for a living. In the meantime, he started a house painting business that supported him until about 1994 when he closed it to be a full-time artist.

Aside from his academic training as an artist, he participated with one of the world’s foremost personal development organizations, where he held a leadership position for over 12 years facilitating courses on self-expression and leadership.  This work gave him a lot of tools and ways of thinking about how to approach difficult challenges and get results, especially in his career.
He then went on to create a lecture I called “The Business of being an Artist” that I presented to many prestigious institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts graduate program, University of the Arts, Moore College and Kutztown University.
