Do you love children’s books? Here is your chance to explore the possibilities of the medium. This workshop will provide a step by step process to learn how to compose an illustrated children’s book. You will begin with an inspiration, e.g. a story, poem, song or any other idea appropriate for a children’s book. The aim of this class is to gain the technical skill and knowledge required to complete a cover, a splash and a spread. Students are encouraged to work with any medium for their project. The first portion of the class will be spent on demonstrations by the instructor and students will then have a chance to work independently and share their work in progress with the instructor and the class.

What You Will Learn in This Course:
1. Basic layout for visual storytelling
2. Style selection for the composition of the book
3. Character development, color composition, and environment design
4. Basic typography
5. Understanding the extent of detailing

  • This is an in-person class which will take place in our building with strict social distancing protocols and reduced student capacity. Please see our COVID-19 community safety policies.
  • Students are encouraged to have examples of any children book or illustration they are inspired by.

Supplies will depend on the project. Students are welcome to use oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolor, collage or any other medium. For layout paper, pencil and color pencil or acrylic is necessary. The final illustration can be done on paper or canvas.
