Portrait painting has a rich and fruitful history. In this course, students will be exposed to not only a brief history of the portrait but also the varying ways a portrait can be made. From alla prima to a more nuanced depiction using oils or acrylics, a sound structure of painting the human portrait will be explored. What you will learn in this class: 1. History of portraiture painting. 2. The structure and anatomy of the head/face. 3. Alla prima techniques for portrait painting.

  • This is an in-person class which will take place in our building with strict social distancing protocols and reduced student capacity. Proof of vaccination is required, and masks must be worn at all times. Please see our COVID-19 community safety policies.
  • • Canvas* 8” x 10" or 11” x 14"
  • • 3 glass jars with lids
  • • Cloth rags
  • • Hard wooden, plastic, or glass palette with a completely flat surface (no cups)
  • • Metal palette knife, the kind with a bent segment between handle and blade (no plastic)
  • • Brushes*: #2, 4, 6 in round and flat
  • • Paints: titanium white, burnt umber, ultramarine blue, cadmium red (or hue), cadmium yellow (or hue), yellow ochre, naples yellow, sap green, pthalo green. Optional: Chinese vermillion or quinacridone magenta (for a cool red), cobalt blue (or hue)
