Explore the fundamentals of fabrication in metal with the focus on jewelry design. Learn the basic jewelry making techniques such as forming and forging, stone setting, soldering, and brazing using various materials. Learn from instructor demos about the design and fabrication of pendants, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, brooches, rings, belt buckles and other creative accessories, as well as art objects such as containers, ornaments, and small-scale sculptures. The instructor will also provide plenty of individual feedback with each student's project. This class is designed for all levels. Bring your creative ideas and take home beautiful jewelry pieces of your own design. What you will learn in this class 1. Learn and improve your soldering skills 2. Fabricating and fitting parts and pieces together 3. Understanding of mechanical properties of locking systems and fabricating of findings 4. Learn and improve your level of metal forming both hollow and forging 5. Introduction to stone setting 6. Introduction of working in wax, carving, and building in hard and soft waxes

  • This is an in-person class which will take place in our building with strict social distancing protocols and reduced student capacity. Proof of vaccination is required, and masks must be worn at all times. Please see our COVID-19 community safety policies.
  • For the first class, students should bring the following supplies:

  • Not required but helpful materials:
  • • Sketch pads
  • • Tracing paper
  • • Rulers
  • • French curves (not too important but very helpful in free form design)
  • • Templates for geometric shapes or other shapes that you find interesting

  • Required:

  • We will discuss these materials more during the first class, students will not need to purchase most items until later in the term.

  • • Pencils for drawing and design work
  • • Extra fine tip and regular tip sharpie for marking your metal
  • • 2/0 or 3/0 saw blades
  • • Hard, medium, and easy silver solder
  • • 320, 400, & 600 grit sandpaper
  • • 22 gauge 3"x 3" copper, brass, or silver
  • • 20 gauge 3"X3" copper, brass, or silver
  • • 18 gauge 3"X 3" copper, brass, or silver
  • • 4" 12 gauge sterling silver (length could vary so please wait to purchase)
  • • 6" 26 gauge fine silver bezel wire (length could vary so please wait to purchase)
  • • 10mm or larger cabochon stone

  • Students will be emailed a week before classes start to share what they need to be prepared for the first day!
