In this class, students will explore the possibilities of painting by experimenting with various materials and subjects of choice. The class aims to give students the opportunity to explore a wide range of painting materials including but not limited to elongated formats (such as scrolls), wood panels, mylar, paper, and so forth. Each offers a unique range of painting gestures, historical significance, and display options. The material will bolster the storytelling component of the course. Students will learn to develop their personal languages through the act of painting and in response to the material. The class will culminate in a final project that allows students to convey their ideas in their chosen format(s). This class is open to students of all levels. Classes will start with a short presentation of a specific painting format. Students will use the rest of the time for their own projects. Instructor feedback will be provided for each class. There will be a critique in the last session. This class is open to any medium, though there will be a focus on oil and acrylic painting. The instructor will assist with the technical and conceptual aspects of painting. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS CLASS 1. How to use oil paint 2. How to turn daily observations and memories into subjects for painting 3. How to experiment with different painting formats 4. An overview of painting formats across cultures 5. How to cultivate your visual language
