This class will cover several different wire basketry techniques that can be used for everything from representational sculpture to functional baskets. Students will learn how to adapt the techniques they learn to suit the forms they want to make, and how to incorporate other materials into their wire work. We will cover a variety of sculptural applications, as well as basic principles of composition as they apply to 3D objects.
Each class will include demos, one-on-one check-ins with the instructor, and time for individual work.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. Three-part wire weaving for simple and complex 3D forms
2. Two-part weaving with single and double walls
3. Incorporating other materials, composition with multi-media

  • Some of the wire we’ll be working with can stain your clothes so we recommend wearing dark colors and/or clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

  • Working with wire can unfortunately sometimes be difficult for people with arthritis or other issues with hand pain or dexterity.

  • This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class.

    You will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.

  • Start the term with these supplies:
  • • Needle-nosed pliers;
  • • Wire cutters (if your pliers have them at the base you don't need a separate pair);
  • • Exacto knife or box cutter
  • • 1 3.5 lb roll of rebar tie wire
  • • 3 30-yard spools of 26-gauge copper wire in your favorite colors;
  • •Midway through the term students will need these supplies:
  • • Depending on the size of your work you may need more 26 gauge copper wire and more rebar tie wire. If you work small you won’t.
  • • For the last class you’ll need any interesting yarn/fabric scraps/beads/paper you want to incorporate into your wire work.
