Have you ever wondered why, or how a picture works? In this Introduction to 2D (two dimensional) Design, you will learn about the basic building blocks of art and design.

Each week, through drawing, painting, or collage you will explore an art element, like line, color, shape, texture, value, or space. We will combine these elements into each project which will teach you an art principle such as: contrast, repetition, balance, proportion, emphasis, movement, or unity.

Through observation, experimentation, and critique you will develop your eye and design sensibility and be on your way to making better images.

This course is open to all levels, but is particularly useful for beginners. In this interactive class you will be encouraged to communicate and collaborate with classmates, but there will be plenty of quiet, focused work-time, along with one-on-one interaction with the teacher.

  • This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class.

    You will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.

  • START THE TERM WITH THESE SUPPLIES:
  • • 8x10 spiral bound sketchbook and 1 black sharpie
  • • 2B pencil (most school-style pencils are 2B)
  • • White eraser
  • • 1-3 watercolor paintbrushes of assorted sizes
  • • Scissors
  • • ruler
  • • Large glue stick
  • • Color media of choice (colored pencils, watercolor set, gouache, etc.-no oil paint!)
  • • Collage media of choice (magazines, construction paper pad, card stock assortment pack,etc)
  • • For the final project you will need:
  • • 1-2 sheets Bristol board or canvas board for final project

Marie Elcin has been teaching in both the children and adult programs at Fleisher since 2007. She has a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design and a Master of Art Education from Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She is a practicing fiber artist with a focus on embroidery, surface design, and printmaking.
