This course covers the basics of mosaics. Beginning with an historical overview of this ancient art form, students will acquire a strong foundation in tools, materials and techniques. There will be a focus on andamento, the fluid, undulating lines that widen and narrow to create a very pleasing effect. By learning the fundamentals of this classical “language,” students will connect to mosaic’s early roots. They will view not only Roman and Byzantine examples but many contemporary ones as well. Participants will create at least one small piece that integrates all of these concepts and skills. More advanced techniques and materials will also be introduced.
