Explore the fundamentals of fabrication in metal with the focus on jewelry design. Learn the basic jewelry making techniques such as forming and forging, stone setting, soldering, and brazing using various materials. Learn from instructor demos about the design and fabrication of pendants, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, brooches, rings, belt buckles and other creative accessories, as well as art objects such as containers, ornaments, and small-scale sculptures. The instructor will also provide plenty of individual feedback with each student's project. This class is designed for all levels. Bring your creative ideas and take home beautiful jewelry pieces of your own design.

What you will learn in this class

1. Learn and improve your soldering skills
2. Fabricating and fitting parts and pieces together
3. Understanding of mechanical properties of locking systems and fabricating of findings
4. Learn and improve your level of metal forming both hollow and forging
5. Introduction to stone setting
6. Introduction of working in wax, carving, and building in hard and soft waxes

  • This is an in-person class which will take place in our building with strict social distancing protocols and reduced student capacity. Please see our COVID-19 community safety policies.
  • First class students should bring the following supplies
  • • Sketch pads
  • • Tracing paper
  • • Rulers
  • • French curves (not too important but very helpful in free form design)
  • • Templates for geometric shapes or other shapes that you find interesting
  • • Pencils for drawing and design work
  • • Extra fine felt tip pens for marking your metal
  • We will discuss these materials in the first class, but students will not need to purchase until later in the term.
  • • Needle files and larger hand files and saw frames, saw blades, and sandpaper
  • • 3"square of copper or bronze and some silver solder
  • • Silver sheet or rod and wire
  • • Waxes hard in blocks and slices or ring tubes and soft sheet or wire form depending on your project ideas
  • • Wax tools like course files and sharp knives like Xacto blades, spatulas and some dental tools will be discussed and demoed in class
