Learn the traditional methods and materials of western hand papermaking, as well as contemporary creative techniques to make two-dimensional paper artworks. With an initial focus on sheet production (making paper by hand), students will explore inclusions (a wet “collage” technique), translucent pulps, and pigmented pulps to incorporate imagery directly into their paper, making unique or editioned works of art. Students of all disciplines and levels are encouraged to bring their ideas to this tactile medium.

What will you learn in this workshop
1. learn the techniques and tools of hand papermaking using various fibers, including cotton, abaca, and flax
2. develop a nuanced sensibility towards the characteristics of paper
3. develop an understanding of how contemporary creative techniques are related to historical methods
4. develop a personal voice and vocabulary using paper pulp as the artistic medium
