Portrait painting has a rich and fruitful history. In this class, students will be exposed to not only a brief history of the portrait but also the varying ways a portrait can be made. From alla prima to a more nuanced depiction using oils or acrylics, a sound structure of painting the human portrait will be explored.

What you will learn in this class:
1. History of portraiture painting.
2. The structure and anatomy of the head/face.
3. Alla prima techniques for portrait painting.

  • This is an in-person class which will take place in our 4th floor rear studio with strict social distancing protocols and a maximum of 8 students in the space. Students will be required to wear masks for the entire duration of the class.

  • Please note: class will not be held on July 5. A make-up session for the class will take place on August 2.
  • • Canvas* 8” x 10" or 11” x 14"
  • • 3 glass jars with lids
  • • Cloth rags
  • • Hard wooden, plastic, or glass palette with a completely flat surface (no cups)
  • • Metal palette knife, the kind with a bent segment between handle and blade (no plastic)
  • • Brushes*: #2, 4, 6 in round and flat
  • • Paints: titanium white, burnt umber, ultramarine blue, cadmium red (or hue), cadmium yellow (or hue), yellow ochre, naples yellow, sap green, pthalo green. Optional: Chinese vermillion or quinacridone magenta (for a cool red), cobalt blue (or hue)
