In this five-week figurative online class, students will be challenged to think of the figure in terms of simple interlocking forms and shapes to create powerful design-compositions. The aim will be to create dozens of quickly finished sketches each session in order to build strong picture-making habits with immediate results.

Open to any medium, this class will meet the needs of creating bold figurative abstractions with the human form as a pretext.

What you will learn in this class:
1. Figure proportions and knowledge of bodily landmarks.
2. Seeing combinations of simple shapes and distilling them into abstract designs.
3. Loosening up your drawing with quick sketches.
4. Building up a formal drawing or painting from sketches.

  • This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class.

  • You will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.
  • For the first day of class have these items:
  • • A sketchbook
  • • 18" x 24" Newsprint paper
  • • Charcoal
  • • Kneaded rubber eraser
  • • Open to all media, please bring supplies that you may want to use in this class.
