This is your introduction to the techniques, history, and aesthetics of decorative and functional mosaics. You may use many mosaic materials, including pebbles, stained glass, marble, ceramic plates and tiles, smalti, and paper to create finished pieces. The emphasis will be on design, pattern, construction, and finished presentation.

Your instructor will provide lots of useful information about historical and contemporary mosaic works, along with where to source materials and specialized tools, for your specific projects.

  • This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class.

  • You will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.

  • Please note: this is an 8 session course. Class will not be held on January 18 and February 15 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and President’s Day.
  • • Begin the term with a notebook, pencil, some colored paper (magazines will be fine - just make sure you have some solid colors), scissors, and glue (a glue stick is a neat option). The instructor will discuss which tools are best for each project on the first night of class.

  • • Though you can learn a tremendous amount making only paper mosaics and exploring the topics covered in the demonstrations, most students will also enjoy making a more solid piece. Depending on the technique chosen you will probably need a substrate, something to glue down, the proper adhesive for the job, a few tools, and maybe grout. We will cover some options during the first class. If you have supplies and tools already that’s great. Bring them to the first class and we can jumpstart the conversation.
