Learn the basics of painting in gouache, and explore the rich and surprising ways the medium interacts with oil pastels. Draw and paint from observation and imagination, and experiment with the materials while working at your own pace. Participants will also be invited to use invented, spontaneous marks, personal emblems and imaginative subjects to explore compositions that emphasize texture, color, space, and surprising juxtapositions of media and content. The first hour of the class will be spent on demonstrations by the instructor and the second hour students will have a chance to work independently and share their work in progress with the instructor and the class.


WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS CLASS
1. Gain an understanding of gouache painting combined with oil pastel.
2. Develop confidence in using both mediums for artistic expression
3. Increase your knowledge of composition, light/dark contrast, color analysis, and use of texture.

  • This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class.

  • Within 48 hours of registration, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.
  • • 6 – 10 sheets of watercolor paper (11”x 14”, 14” x 17” and/or 18”x24”)

  • • Selection of good quality oil pastels (Sennelier strongly recommended) and tubes of gouache in basic colors:
  • - Red
  • - Yellow
  • - Ultramarine blue
  • - Thalo (or permanent) green
  • - Quinacra (or red violet) violet
  • - Black and white

  • • Round tip watercolor brushes from #8 to #11
  • • Small sponges
  • • Palette cups
  • • Water container

  • *Do not buy any gouache that includes "acrylic" in the description!
