To capture the personal gaze of self-portraiture using oil paint as a tool of mark-making. Self Portrait Painting is a class that encourages the artist to paint their own self-portrait using mirrors, to observe their mark-making as they relate the image to a surface. Understanding the primitive eye and the critical eye. Each class will have an hour demo on painting with different mediums on diverse surfaces. Gaining the use of the artist vocabulary through the dialogue of art within the art of critique or artist feedback sessions.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS CLASS
1. Observing and painting the self-portrait through the mirror
2. The structure of head and face
3. Descriptive qualities of mark-making
4. Effects of lighting and how awareness of tone and color relates to the self-portrait

  • This is an online class hosted through Zoom. We recommend that you download the free Zoom application on your computer, phone, or tablet in advance of the first class.

  • Within 48 hours of registration, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the course via Zoom. The same link will be used each week.
  • • Mirrors (full length or smallest 8 x 10)
  • • Various brushes include, Round, flat and fan ranging in sizes.
  • • Rags or Viva paper towels
  • Oil Painting mediums
  • • Oil paint sets or individual selected paints for your pallet.
  • • Olive Green
  • • Titanium White
  • • Ultramarine Blue
  • • Burnt Umber
  • • Burnt Sienna
  • • Cadmium Orange*
  • • Cadmium Yellow*
  • • Permanent Rose
  • *I am aware that Cadmiums can be more expensive than a general color, if you can find the
  • hue of the cadmium that will be acceptable for this course.

  • Surfaces do not have to be Canvas but please make sure your surface will be
  • compatible with the oil paint, e.g., canvas, wood, certain drawing papers…
  • Sizes of surfaces can also range to 18x 24 inches to larger, provided we have space to create and store and let dry after class.
