Tighten up your camera straps and get out your thinking caps for a spirited foray into photographic critique and practice. Rick Wright’s two-pronged workshop will center on the practice of good critique: Talking-the-Talk. To be better photographers, students need to improve their discourse; avoiding easy lines like “I like this,” or “that’s a really nice photo.” In Prong 1 we’ll delve into finding out WHY some images succeed and others do not, as we build up a critical vocabulary together. In Prong 2 of the class, Walking-the-Walk, Rick will be putting you to the test with various prompts to get you shooting in theme-based ways. Once inside a specific prompt (ex: shadows, passageways, weather, popcorn), students will discover just how bendable and sculptural a camera can be. Photography is a Plastic Art, says Rick!
You will critique each other’s work every session. By workshop’s end, Rick hopes you’ll have fused an increasingly critical voice (the “Why” images work) with an expanded, precise, and expressive practice (the “Plastic” camera). The two prongs should work in unison and you WILL see gains on both sides; ultimately making you a better image-maker in full control of your medium.
