This class will provide Fleisher students with the unique opportunity to paint a model, both clothed figure and portrait, alla-prima or en plein air, examining how colors, values, and the very perception of the shape change under the natural light. Each week will present us with a new pose at different locations through Philadelphia parks. We will cover spatial and linear perspective, the importance of the silhouette and local colors, mixing colors, arrangement of the image, composition, usage of brushes and palette knife. Experience drawing and painting from the model is recommended.

  • This is an in-person, off-site course that will take place in various locations throughout the Philadelphia region. The instructor will communicate the locations via email before each class. We will practice social distancing during class sessions.
  • • Paints: professional oil or acrylic or casein paints ( Windsor & Newton, Richeson/Shiva, Williamsburg, Sennelier, Gamblin, Utrecht or comparable):

  • • Titanium white
  • • Cadmium Yellow (light or lemon)
  • • Ochre (yellow or light)
  • • Raw Siena
  • • Venetian Red or English Red or Red Ochre
  • • Cadmium Red Light or Vermilion or Scarlet Red
  • • Alizarin Crimson
  • • Ultramarine Blue
  • • Emerald Green
  • • Burnt Umber
  • • Ivory Black

  • • Brushes: if you have any brushes you comfortable with please bring them. However you should take into account the sizes of your canvases. Normally, for outdoor painting we'd have round and flat (or almond shape) bristle or semi-soft and stiff synthetic brushes about 1/3" to 1" thick.

  • • Palette knife
  • • Appropriate palette. For oils you'd prefer to use traditional plywood palette polished with varnish or boiled linseed oil. For acrylic paints you'd better use white plastic or metal palette or tray. For short plain-air sketches you won't need a big palette which would more likely distract you, so I recommend to prefer one about 9" by 12" or slightly smaller.

  • • Solvent for oil painting. Turpentine (if you have no allergies) or odorless turpenoid. To make your paints dry faster you could use dammar varnish (adding just a little bit to your turpentine) or oil painting medium.

  • • Palette cup for oils or plastic cup for water to paint with acrylic or casein (do not forget water!)
  • • Canvas pad 9" by 12" or 12" by 16".
  • • Portable easel or plain-air box.
  • • Rags for cleaning brushes and palette.
  • • Tray or flat cardboard box sized to your canvas pad for transporting wet painting (you won't need one for acrylic or casein since these paints get dry quite fast)

  • Remember that en plein air painting means that we're going to spend 3+ hours outdoor. So please carry a foldable chair, portable sun umbrella or hat to avoid getting overheated and tired.
