This online Figure Painting class is an introduction to the methods and materials of oil painting the figure. This class begins with an investigation of color and color relationships. It will also cover technical issues and develop the student's ability to create a convincing sense of form using mass, color, light, and composition. The majority of work is from direct observation and self-portraits. Students in this class will develop various quick study paintings and one or two long pose paintings. There will be in-class/zoom studio time to work on projects, and homework will be assigned to work on projects outside of class. Students will gain knowledge and develop a wide range of conceptual and technical skills. This course will expand students understanding of visual representation and visual thinking frameworks. Students will be exposed to a great number of historical and contemporary artists and creative thinkers that bring about valuable ideas and questions in regards to painting and image-making.

1. Historical and contemporary examples of figure painting
2. Proportion and human anatomy
3. Color relationships and mixing color
4. Compositional and formal elements
