You can’t write a memoir without gathering a lot of memories. Which ones? In what order? Which events, images, anecdotes to include? Who are the essential characters in the story only you can tell? This online class deals with those questions and the critical one: how to write clear, compelling well-ordered sentences to structure all those thoughts in your head.
There will be exercises – memory prompts to get you started. We’ll try some timed writing; explore published excerpts and genres. There will be weekly assignments to share. A good memoir can be any genre or hybrid— essay, poem, long or short sketch — so long as it shows more than it tells.
