This hands-on introductory class will allow you to explore the popular medium of watercolor. You will discover essential techniques during instructor demonstrations, and practice painting in a variety of settings. Learn about watercolor materials, get help with paper selection and preparation, and gain the basic watercolor skills to be on your way to creating the paintings you always wanted.

This class serves as both an introduction and exploration of the watercolor medium. Students will learn a variety of painting techniques including layering and washes, bringing vitality to your work through marks and brush strokes, dry brush, wet in wet, masking, resist and experimental techniques. Artistic principles such as color, line, value, composition, form, shape and texture will be considered throughout the course.

Prior drawing experience is recommended.

• Participants must have a valid Fleisher membership.

  • START THE TERM WITH THESE SUPPLIES:
  • You can consult the instructor on your materials before purchasing, and many of the items are available in the school store.
  • • Watercolor in tubes in the following colors:
  • White, Black, Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Viridian Green, Prussian Blue, Raw Umber or Burnt Umber.
  • • Watercolor palate (or any plastic or Styrofoam tray –meat trays work well or plastic fast food containers)
  • • Container for water
  • • Watercolor brushes, short handled, soft white bristles- small pointed, large flat, and as many in between as desired 3 or 4 recommended
  • • Pad of watercolor paper (recommended size is 11”x 15”)
  • • Drawing board or support for watercolor paper
  • • Paper towels
