For the beginning student, you will learn fundamentals of screenprinting. We will cover different screenprinting techniques including various screen stencils, block-outs, and color registration. For students with screenprinting experience, this class is for those who wish to work in an instructed studio environment. Students develop high quality editions or monoprints on paper, fabric, or other media.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. Ability to pull a screenprint with expertise and confidence after both group and individual instruction. For the beginning student: Print at least one three color edition of 12 prints.
2. Understanding of the variety of stencil making techniques available for the screenprint artist.
3. Learn about the unique characteristics and endless possibilities of the screenprint medium through its practice and through viewing examples of the screenprint medium.
4. Learn to work in the community setting of the Screenprint studio with shared materials and equipment.
5. Goals are set regarding what each student hopes to achieve on the first day of class through showing examples of their previous artwork or sketches for ideas, both printed and non –printed.

  • START THE TERM WITH THESE SUPPLIES:
  • • Sketchbook/notebook, and writing tool of your choice.
  • • Also, if possible, please bring any sketches or examples of previous artwork that you think could become ideas for silkscreen.

  • OTHER SUPPLIES WILL BE DISCUSSED ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS
  • • Protective gloves, such as dishwashing type, not vinyl or latex surgical style
  • • Water-based Textile or Permanent Acrylic Screenprinting Inks, in 8-oz. containers [note: do not buy water-soluble inks — read labels carefully]
  • Definitely buy black, white, and the primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. You may, of course, buy any other colors you like.
  • • Plastic pint-size containers with lids for storing mixed ink. The best are the screw top lids to keep the ink preserved air tight. No glass or metal containers.
  • • Printmaking paper (archival cotton paper) — at least 4 sheets, 22 X 30 inches
  • Recommended: Arches 88 Silkscreen, Stonehenge, and Lennox or any smooth printmaking paper.
  • • 18 X 24-inch newsprint paper pad
  • • Roll of masking tape, 1 or 2 inches wide
  • • Portfolio — may be low-priced cardboard variety or you can make one with cardboard
  • • Storage for inks and class supplies: cardboard box, plastic box, or a sturdy bag
