The film musical, an outgrowth of the American stage, swept the world in the 1930's but by the late sixties had fallen quickly into decline with the changing times. From there, filmmakers restruck the family-friendly musical as a place for surrealism, outsider perspectives and rock and roll. We'll see and hear five examples from the last century and we'll discuss the collaborators involved, unravel the themes and examine the strategies pursued in reinvigorating the movie musical form.

Among the Films to be Screened:
PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (1974, directed by Brian De Palma, music by Paul Williams)
STARSTRUCK (1982, directed by Gillian Anderson, music by Tim Funn)
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (2001, directed by John Cameron Mitchell, music by Stephen Trask)
HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS (directed by Takashi Miike, 2001, music by Koji Makaino & Koji Endo)
THE LURE (2015. directed by Agnieszka Smoczynska, music by Barbara & Zuzanna Wronska)
