As an introduction to the fundamentals of painting the figure, this class encourages careful and deliberate study of value and color in flesh painting. You will explore limited palette and develop skills for simplifying complex forms. Working from the model you will begin with small color/value sketches in oil.

  • Intro to Figure Painting Supply List:
  • Gamblin Artist Oils, (or Gamblin 1980 to save money)
  • Burnt Seinna 37ml
  • Ivory black 37ml
  • Yellow ochre 37ml
  • Ultramarine blue 37ml
  • Quinacridone red 37 ml
  • Cadmium yellow light, or Hansa yellow light 37ml
  • Titanium white 150 ml
  • Gamsol 12oz to 16oz
  • Neomeglip, Galkid (small bottles)
  • Brushes a variety of flats and filberts, bristle and synthetic (small, medium and large) One flat brush that’s at least one inch wide.
  • Palet knife
  • glass jar to hold Gamsol, at least 2” wide, 2” deep
  • Rags or paper towels
  • A disposable pallet or a wooden or glass pallet
  • Surfaces, Primed canvases, primed wood, gesso board, and or Yupo paper one for each class. Preferred sizes:
  • 16x20, 18x24”, 24x24”, 22x30”

Lara Cantu-Hertzler is a Philadelphia painter who is inspired by architecture and the figure. She explores themes of urban decay and feminine identity. Lara’s influences include: classical art, dance, photography, abstract expressionism and impressionism. In 2008 Lara graduated from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts graduating with a Certificate in painting. In 2014 Lara received a full fellowship to Vermont Studio Center. Lara’s had solo shows at: Allens Lane Art Center, Abington Art Center, and High Wire Gallery. She’s also exhibited her work at Rittenhouse Square, and Rosenfeld Gallery. Lara has won numerous awards from The Philadelphia Sketch club, and The Philadelphia National Arts Program.
