We will examine five feature films that take us beyond the world of big-budget blockbusters to a sci-fi more concerned with thought-provoking ideas than spectacle. We review the history of the genre in film, discuss the role of satire and social criticism in sci-fi, and explore the films' metaphoric possibilities. We will also survey the careers and approaches of the directors and their collaborators and consider the diverse voices that have contributed to the form over the decades.
