Fiber artists, quilters, and sewists will enjoy this opportunity to design and create your own fabrics filled with color, mark, and pattern. In this 5 day intensive, we will experiment with eco-dyeing, sun printing, shibori indigo dyeing, and block printing. At the end of the intensive, there will be time for independent work and discussion on possibilities for using the dyed and printed fabrics in functional or artistic works.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. Students will consider design elements of pattern, mark, repetition, and composition in surface design.
2. Students will learn binding and folding techniques for creating pattern in indigo and eco-dyeing
3. Students will learn how to create stencils and photograms in solar printing.
4. Students will learn how to design and carve a linoleum block for motif printing.
5. Students will consider potential uses of their dyed and printed fabrics for functional or artistic works.

  • FOR THE FIRST CLASS BRING THESE SUPPLIES:
  • 3-5 yards of white cotton broadcloth or white cotton clothing blanks
  • spool of sewing thread
  • sewing needle
  • scissors
  • dishwashing gloves
  • a 4 oz.bottle of Jacquard
  • solarfast dye
  • foam brush
  • 1-2 colors of 2.5 oz speedball fabric block printing ink
  • sketchbook
  • pencil

Marie Elcin has been teaching in both the children and adult programs at Fleisher since 2007. She has a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design and a Master of Art Education from Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She is a practicing fiber artist with a focus on embroidery, surface design, and printmaking.
