In this four week class, we will explore traditional bookbinding structures some very modern materials and techniques. This is a great class for an introduction into the world of making books. You will gain a solid foundation in basic binding techniques as well as comfort with various tools and materials.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. The basic hand skills of cutting, folding and sewing various materials
2. Different papers and other materials used in bookbinding
3. Several different types of bindings based on historic structures and techniques
4. Sources for materials, tools, and instructional guidance for future learning

  • Your studio fee includes many of the materials used in this workshop. There are some additional personal tools you will need, see below.
  • Bone folder
  • Stiff bristle brush for gluing (at least 1” can be synthetic)
  • Olfa cutting knife (or X-acto) with blades
  • Scissors
  • Self healing Cutting Mat
  • Straight edge, or metal ruler
  • Pencil
  • White eraser
  • Empty container for glue (for example a yogurt container, but should have lid)
  • Decorative paper
