A condensed course that takes a look at color in practice. We will examine color mixing methodologies, color perception, and color interactions through demonstrations and execution of small still-life paintings. Appropriate for beginners, and ideal for intermediate and advanced students.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. Use complementary and split complementary colors to energize your pictures and alter viewers' perceptions.
2. Learn a variety of color mixing strategies, and how to use value, temperature and chroma to manage mixtures
3. Learn to exploit the visual interactions of color to enhance color perception
4. Use color as a tool to create realistic depictions by mimicking the effects of light and space

  • • Paints in the following colors (this is a suggested minimum palette, but experienced painters may use their customary colors): titanium white, black, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue *
  • • Paper towels
  • • Palette
  • • Approximately 11" X 14" canvas (1 each week; 4 total)
  • • Painting knife with offset handle (metal recommended)
  • • Assorted sizes and shapes of bristle and soft-haired brushes
  • (synthetic brushes are recommended for acrylic painters)
  • • For Oil Painters Only: Refined linseed oil or prepared oil painting medium, Odorless paint thinner (quart minimum), palette cup or small container, Large lidded jar (spaghetti sauce size)
  • • For Acrylic Painters Only: Acrylic gloss or matte medium, Large container for water (quart cottage cheese containers work well)
