Curiosity and the desire to experience painting are the requirements for this class. Students with any level of art experience are welcomed to experiment with color, line and the power of perception that makes painting a powerful experience. This workshop will introduce you to color relationships and mixing colors, principles of composition, paint application techniques, and working from the figure.



WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. Temperature of Color
2. How to invent color relationships
3. How to look at paintings
4. What geometry in painting looks like
5. The value of imagination in the act of painting

  • FOR THE FIRST CLASS BRING THESE SUPPLIES:
  • • For brushes buy 3 medium sizes: 1 Round, 1 Flat, 1 Filbert (https://www.craftsy.com/art/article/paint-brush-primer/)
  • • Pre-Primed canvas, size no larger than 11x14
  • • Oil Paints: Raw Umber, Brunt Umber, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Titanium White (Gamblin is a good quality paint for the price)
  • • Linseed Oil (inexpensive is fine)
  • • Solvent: Turpenoid is good
  • • 2 Large Jars with lids
  • • 2 Large tomatoes cans
  • • Rags
  • • Palette with lid or palette paper (Note: palette with lid will preserve your paint!)
  • • Plastic wrap or saran wrap
  • • Palette knife
  • OTHER SUPPLIES TO BE DISCUSSED ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS:
  • • Other oil paint colors

Lara Cantu-Hertzler is a Philadelphia painter who is inspired by architecture and the figure. She explores themes of urban decay and feminine identity. Lara’s influences include: classical art, dance, photography, abstract expressionism and impressionism. In 2008 Lara graduated from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts graduating with a Certificate in painting. In 2014 Lara received a full fellowship to Vermont Studio Center. Lara’s had solo shows at: Allens Lane Art Center, Abington Art Center, and High Wire Gallery. She’s also exhibited her work at Rittenhouse Square, and Rosenfeld Gallery. Lara has won numerous awards from The Philadelphia Sketch club, and The Philadelphia National Arts Program.
