An in-depth and practical examination of the role of color in painting, from selecting and arranging palettes to the effects of paint layering. Explore color mixing strategies, color interactions, and perceptual influences, through instructor demonstrations. A broad overview of color theory will give you a foundation for mixing color and selecting your palette. Subject matter is mainly still-life, along with one session with a life model. Appropriate for beginners, and ideal for intermediate and advanced students.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS WORKSHOP
1. Use complementary and split complementary colors to energize your pictures and alter viewer perceptions.
2. Learn a variety of color mixing strategies - using value & temperature & chroma
to manage mixtures; methodologies
3. Learn to exploit the visual interactions of color to enhance color perception
4. Use color as a tool to mimic the effects of light and space with realistic depiction

  • • Painting surfaces of various sizes (9" X 12" to 18" X 24")
  • • Odorless paint thinner (for oil painters only)
  • • Painting medium
  • • Palette cup (double) or other small containers
  • • Palette and palette knife
  • • Soft paper towels or lint-free rags
  • • • Brushes for oil painters: 4-5 bristle brushes in round, filbert and bright shapes (plus optional soft-haired brushes)
  • • Brushes for acrylic painters: synthetic, soft-haired watercolor type brushes in flat wash shape (1/2", 1" and 2"), plus optional #2 and #6 round brushes
  • The following minimal, high-key palette is recommended to start with. Additional colors will be demonstrated as the course progresses.
  • Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue
