This workshop concentrates on basic concepts and skills needed to sculpt the human figure. Proportion, basic anatomy, and techniques of working in clay will be covered in specifically themed sessions each week.

Learn the basic concepts and skills needed to sculpt the human figure. Using the armature as our starting place, you will learn to anchor the figure to the core elements of human anatomy. Each week will focus on gesture, form, and clay techniques.

Some experience with drawing, painting, or sculpture from live models is helpful, but not mandatory.

What You Will Learn In This Class

1. Basic knowledge of the anatomy of the figure.
2. Understanding the figures full range of motion and related anatomical nomenclature
3. Knowledge of the skeletal landmarks, proportion, balance, and gesture of the figure.
4. Introduction to clay modeling techniques

  • Fleisher will be closed on Monday May 27, to observe the Memorial Day holiday, the make-up session will be on June 10.
  • Required supplies for this class:
  • • Sketchbook or notebook and a folder for handouts
  • • Full figure armature, torso armature or board for modeling *
  • • 3/16 Dowel or Barbecue skewer for sight measuring.
  • • 12 inch calipers
  • • Flat 6 to 8 inch flat modeling tools (various tools for sculpture reviewed the first class)
  • • Wire clay cutting tool
  • • Plumb bob (or large fishing weight) w/ string
  • • Small spray bottle for water
  • • Trash or dry cleaner bag
  • • Cotton rags (old sheet, t-shirt) to hydrate your sculpture
