No green thumb or backyard needed—create your own sustainable eco-system with a DIY terrarium, the perfect option for city folk without much yard space. With a wide variety of plants and materials to choose from, you will go home with customized terrariums that mimic natural environments including tropical, desert and temperate. Terrarium making can be done as meticulously or wildly as you like and make great tabletop decorations. Workshop emphasis will be placed on identification, propagation, and care as well as color and decorative elements which include crafting fun sculptures to inhabit your gardens under glass.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1 How to choose the right vessel for your terrarium
2 Basic plant identification, propagation, and care
3 How to use color and decorative elements to create an interesting narrative/ aesthetic
4 Learn about self-regulating, portable eco-systems

  • The instructor will be providing a lot of materials (plants, vessels, dirt, moss, etc.) but you are encouraged to bring in your own plants and vessels as well--Home Depot and Lowes are a great resource
  • Also, check out City Planter in Northern Liberties or Urban Jungle on Passyunk in South Philly. While they’re a bit more expensive they have a great supply.
  • For vessels, anything works from mason jars to bourbon bottles. The wider the mouth the easier it will be to construct though.
