Learn the fundamental principles of constructing the figure through the duotone technique. Different from traditional closed grisaille which is often done in grayscale, duo tone is done with a limited palette and takes the subtle temperature shift in the human form into account.

We'll explore concepts on obtaining accurate proportions, relative value relationship, development of structures and temperature shifts in the figure. Exercises and instruction are designed to sharpen students’ awareness and understanding of these areas. Instruction includes demos, critiques at students’ easels and occasional lectures.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. Constructing the human figure
2. Understanding the proportions and structure of the figure
3 Calibrating accurate value
4. Learning to see subtle temperature shifts

  • START THE TERM WITH:
  • • Artists’ Grade Paints only, Winsor & Newton recommended
  • • Burnt Sienna
  • • French Ultramarine
  • • Titanium White
  • • Bristle filbert brushes (I use silver grand prix #4, #6 most often) and flats
  • • canvas* 16x20 or 18x24
  • • odorless mineral spirit or Gamsol
  • • turp jar/cups
  • • viva paper towel
  • • palette
  • • a pen and notebook
  • Primed canvas toning process
  • For acrylic primed cotton or linen canvas:
  • Dilute Golden Acrylic N6 Neutral Gray Paint with water to the consistency of “half and half”. On pre-stretched pre-primed canvas, apply 1 coat of the mixture using a 2 or 3-inch brush. Apply the mixture covering the entire surface of the canvas with brush strokes going the long way (i.e. parallel to the longer side of the canvas). Make sure the mixture is smooth and evenly applied. The finished tone should have a uniformly smooth gray finish with the canvas showing through the brush marks. If the canvas doesn’t show through the brush strokes, the mixture is either too thick (add more water to mixture) or applied too thick (reduce the amount of mixture on the canvas). If the mixture runs or “bleeds”, then it’s too thin (reduce water or add more acrylic paint). Apply 1 coat only.
  • MIDWAY THROUGH THE TERM
  • • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • • Cadmium Red Deep
  • • Ivory black
