We will begin by studying the figure in grisaille (black and white), then students will complete two 2 session paintings. Emphasized topics include seeing tone, color mixing, human proportions, and focusing on planes to maintain a sense of volume in your painting. We will also discuss the chemistry of oils and traditional oils techniques. Enjoy demonstrations and plenty of individual instruction. Drawing experience required, painting experience encouraged.

What you will learn in this class?
1. Confidence painting the figure
2. Color-mixing
3. General understanding of oil paint and associated materials: knowledge of their chemical properties, how to use, and how to recycle/dispose responsibly
4. Human proportions

  • • 3 glass jars with lids
  • • Cloth rags
  • • Hard wooden, plastic, or glass palette with a completely flat surface (no cups)
  • • Metal palette knife, the kind with a bent segment between handle and blade (no plastic) *
  • • Brushes: at least one small, medium, and large size in both round and flat *
  • • Paints: titanium white, ultramarine blue, cadmium red (or hue), cadmium yellow (or hue), yellow ochre, sap green, raw sienna, burnt sienna, burnt umber, raw umber, ivory black *
  • • Three canvases, panels, or other primed surfaces.  Your choice of sizes 12" x 16" and 18" x 24"*
