This workshop is designed to instruct and encourage both beginning and advanced students. You will gain experience through direct, alla prima, single session painting from the life model. The goal of the workshop is to give each of you the self-confidence--gained through experience--to do rewarding independent work.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. The importance of a functional initial placement
2. The importance of a simple tonal analysis
3. Color development
4. Sensitivity to materials
5. Understanding of painting the head, portraiture, in the historical context

  • You are encouraged to use materials you are already familiar with.

  • The following list of materials are recommended by instructor.
  • • Support: Canvas, panel, or gessoed paper, at least four, from 4 x 6 inches to 18 x 24 inches*
  • • Medium: Linseed oil, Liquin*
  • • Colors: White, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Red Light, Earth Red (English Red, Venetian Red, Flesh Ochre), Quinacridone Red, Burnt Sienna, Viridian Green, Ultramarine Blue, Ivory Black *
  • • Brushes: a variety of fibers, sizes, and shapes (Stan prefer nylon filberts)*
  • • Palette, paper towel, small cups for solvent, mineral spirits*
