Explore the principals of color and design while enhancing your technical familiarity with the mediums of Watercolor and Gouache. Intended as a foundation level course we will examine basic topics of design and color theory, and how they relate to representational and abstract picture making. We will work from still-life objects and live models as reference points to our thematically patterned exercises. Whether you are looking to strengthen the composition of your work through concepts such as harmony, rhythm, balance, dominance, and contrast, or gain practical experience manipulating aqueous mediums, this studio course is essential, especially for those who are looking to advance their artistic experience beyond drawing and into painting.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. The ability to manipulate color.
2. The ability to carry out a successful strategy throughout the process.
3. Learn the basic principles of two dimensional design.
4. Awareness of color interactions: harmony, saturation, and complementary.

  • Fleisher will be closed on Monday May 28, to observe the Memorial Day holiday, the make-up session will be on June 18.
  • START THE TERM WITH THESE SUPPLIES:
  • Watercolors, either Tubes or Half Pans. Recommended colors: Ultramarine Blue, Lemon Yellow, Permanent Rose, Viridian, and Chinese White.
  • -Useful extra colors: Titanium White, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Aureolin Yellow, Payne’s Grey, Burnt Umber.
  • -Gouache basic painting set.
  • -Recommended watercolor brushes: 1) 3/4-in wash flat; 2) #10 round, and 3) either a #4 or #5 pointed round.
  • -Watercolor Paper: 11 x14 inches, or larger hot press 90lb minimum (blocks or pads are good) *
  • -Watercolor palette with wells. *
  • -Containers for water.
  • -White eraser. *
  • -Drawing pencil (2-4H) *
  • -Clear plastic ruler. *
  • -Xacto knife *
