In this workshop, you will learn the traditional Japanese woodcut printmaking technique Moku Hanga. This course covers drawing and transferring your image to your wooden block, safely carving the image with chisels, preparing Japanese paper for printing, mixing inks, and printing 3 colors by hand.

What you will learn in this class?
• Creating a drawing appropriate for a Moku Hanga print
• Transferring the drawing to the woodblock board
• Safe carving practices
• Preparing Japanese paper for printing
• Techniques for mixing ink
• Registering colors using Japanese registration
• Techniques for printing three colors by hand


If you’re interested in learning more about the History of Japanese Art and Design check out the Tuition Free Class on Thursdays, Jan. 11th – Feb. 8th.

  • Please take note that while this class meets on Thursdays, the last session will meet on Friday, March 9th.
  • • Starting out, students will need pencil and ballpoint pen.
  • • Midway through the course, students will need Japanese paper, newsprint, and three small, inexpensive paint brushes.
