How was your neighborhood put together? Through this workshop we will explore the theory and practice of urban design, with an emphasis on architecture, public space, and community development. You will participate in fascinating discussions about the history of human settlement and the changing shape of urban form through colorful lectures and exercises. We will give special attention to public space and gardens, as well as current building projects planned or underway in Philadelphia and around the world.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS COURSE
1. Understand how urban design effects public life, economic development and happiness.
2. Read site plans, analysis maps, site sections and elevation drawings.
3. Appreciate how demographic trends and regulatory measures impact urban design.
4. Understand principles of sustainable urban design.
5. Understand growth and development of world class cities, particularly Philadelphia
