Come learn the basics of painting in gouache, and explore the rich and surprising ways the medium interacts with oil pastels. Draw and paint from observation and imagination, and experiment with the materials while working at your own pace. Participants will also be invited to use invented, spontaneous marks, personal emblems and imaginative subjects to explore compositions that emphasize texture, color, space, and surprising juxtapositions of media and content.


What will you learn in this workshop?
1. Gain an understanding of gouache painting combined with oil pastel.
2. Develop confidence in using both mediums for artistic expression
3. Increase your knowledge of composition, light/dark contrast, color analysis, and use of texture.

  • • 6 – 10 sheets of watercolor paper 11”x14”, 14” x 17” and/or 18”x24”,
  • • A selection of good quality oil pastels*, and tubes of gouache* in basic colors: red, yellow, ultramarine blue, thalo green and quinacra violet, plus black and white.
  • • Round tip watercolor brushes from #8 to #11
  • • Small sponges
  • • Palette cups
  • • Water container
  • Many of these items are available for purchase in Fleisher's supply store. Students presenting a valid Fleisher membership card receive a 10% discount on their purchases
