Collage is a friendly and available way to learn about art making; simultaneously, it is a sophisticated mode of expression. In this immersive workshop we will begin the morning learning and experimenting with mixed media on different kinds of paper; these experiments will then be incorporated into our collages.

In the afternoon, we will ease into quiet and contemplative work time when you will be encouraged to turn inward, letting the art process unfold. By the end of the afternoon you will have created four collages made from your morning experiments, our own discarded artwork, or other personal papers (Xeroxed, not the originals) as part of your finished pieces.

What will you learn in this workshop?

1. Become conversant with new materials and explore ways of combining them through experimentation.

2. Develop a series of work on a theme

3. Explore working from imagination, not relying on subject matter

4. Learn from classmates by observing their work through several group critiques during the term

5. Experience art-making with simple materials and without (perhaps) any art background
