Wrapping, binding, pleating, stitching, and clamping are various ways you will manipulate fabric to create intricate patterns on cloth in this Shibori dyeing class. If you have any interest in textile design or fabric dyeing for fashion, quilting, or fiber art, this class will give you the basics and a chance to explore.

What will you learn in this workshop?
1. Students will learn 5-6 resist dyeing techniques
2. Students will learn the basics for safe handling and measuring of dyes
3. Students will consider colorways for creating a collection of dyed fabrics or garments.

  • • Sketchbook/notebook and pen
  • • Dishwashing gloves and Apron or okay-to-get-messy clothes
  • • 2-4 yds white fabric (cotton, linen, or silk) and/or 4 white clothing blanks (cotton/linen/silk scarves, t-shirts, skirts, pants)
  • • Thread and needles
  • • Scissors or seam ripper
  • Optional:
  • • rubber bands, spring clamps, binder clips, pairs of flat wooden or plastic shapes
  • • 2" or 4" PVC pipe

Marie Elcin has been teaching in both the children and adult programs at Fleisher since 2007. She has a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design and a Master of Art Education from Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She is a practicing fiber artist with a focus on embroidery, surface design, and printmaking.
