In this workshop, we'll examine how visual mediums such as architecture, sculpture, painting, photography, film, and television have been co-opted for propaganda purposes by various ideological and political regimes from ancient times to modern day.

Topics will include parallels between the rise of Fascism in Europe and Asia in the 20th century, Edward Bernays and the creation of consumer propaganda, the War on Drugs, and contemporary American propaganda abroad. This interdisciplinary course will encourage students to critically ‘read’ historic and contemporary images by examining audio-visual resources in class to determine hidden meanings and potential bias.

Students will also have the opportunity to create their own fictional propaganda campaign, which they will present on the last day of class
