Working directly from live models, you will complete two portraits in oil using indirect painting methods, in addition to multiple studies. Indirect painting, as opposed to alla prima, utilizes distinct layers, and each portrait will be completed in stages. An expanded version of the popular 5-week workshop, this course focuses on seeing tone, proportions, achieving accurate colors, and traditional oil painting techniques. Enjoy demonstrations and plenty of individual instruction. Some drawing experience required. No painting experience necessary.


WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN THIS WORKSHOP
1. Understanding of indirect painting techniques
2. Mixing accurate flesh colors
3. General understanding of oil paint and associated materials: knowledge of their chemical properties, how to use, and how to recycle/dispose responsibly
4. Skull/facial proportions

  • START THE TERM WITH THESE SUPPLIES:
  • • Four canvases, panels, or other primed surfaces, recommended size: between 11 x 14 and 18 x 24
  • • Three glass jars with lids
  • • Cloth rags
  • • Hard plastic or glass palette with a completely flat surface (no cups), or palette paper
  • • Metal palette knife, the kind with a bent segment between handle and blade (no plastic)
  • • Brushes: at least one small, medium, and large size in both round and flat
  • • Paints: titanium white, ultramarine blue, cadmium red (or cadmium red hue), alizarin crimson (or quinacridone magenta), cadmium yellow (or cadmium yellow hue), yellow ochre, sap green, raw sienna, burnt sienna, burnt umber*

  • MIDWAY THROUGH THE SEMESTER STUDENTS WILL NEED THESE SUPPLIES:
  • • Two additional canvases, panels, or other primed surfaces, recommended size: between 11 x 14 and 18 x 24
  • • Small bottle of Liquin or Neo Megilp
  • • additional Paints: ivory black, light red
