Using a core palette of colors, learn methods for painting the still-life and figure with solvent-free and easy-to-clean-up acrylic paints. Techniques like blending, layering and impasto are demonstrated, along with a variety of acrylic mediums and modifiers. Drawing experience is recommended.

What will you learn in this workshop?
1. Familiarity with the characteristics of acrylic paints in order to effectively exploit their strengths & limitations.
2. Basic acrylic painting techniques such as layering, blending, and building.
3. Introduction to some of the many types of acrylic painting mediums and other materials used to modify the performance of acrylic paints.
4. Fundamental color mixing and theory.


  • START THE TERM WITH THESE SUPPLIES:
  • • 4 Canvases (Approximately 10" X 16" in size) *
  • • Plastic oil painter’s palette, or pad of disposable palette sheets *
  • • Roll of soft paper towels
  • • Painting or palette knife (metal preferred) *
  • • Acrylic fluid gloss medium (8 oz.)
  • • Synthetic soft-haired (watercolor) brushes:flat wash: 1/2", 1" and 2" *, round #2 and #6 *
  • • Paints: titanium white *, ivory black *

  • MIDWAY THROUGH THE SEMESTER STUDENTS WILL NEED THESE SUPPLIES:
  • • Three canvases approximately 20" X 16", or other painting surfaces *
  • (options include heavy watercolor paper or archival board prepared with 2 coats of acrylic gesso on both sides)
  • • Optional regular gel matte medium (8 oz.)
  • • Optional stiff, synthetic bristle brushes in various shapes and sizes *
  • • Paints: *yellow ochre, burnt sienna, lemon yellow, or hansa yellow light, cadmium yellow medium (hue), cadmium red medium (hue), (alizarin) crimson, (French) ultramarine blue, cerulean blue (hue)
