In this workshop, you will build a vocabulary of embroidery stitches and experience stitching on a variety of surfaces for both decorative, and fine-art purposes. Every semester features different surface design techniques such as painting on fabric, shibori dyeing, fabric collage, bead embellishment, and more.

What will you learn?
1. basic embroidery stitches
2. fabric surface treatment
3. design and embellish an embroidered picture

Past Stitch and Surface students are welcome to return for a new adventure in fiber.

  • design/planning: sketchbook, and pencil/pens *
  • fabric: 1 fat quarter of plain colored cotton fabric (~1/4 yard)
  • embroidery floss: DMC embroidery floss and/or perle cotton in preferred colors
  • 6-8 inch embroidery hoop (wood or plastic)
  • embroidery needles and/or chenille needle
  • scissor

Marie Elcin has been teaching in both the children and adult programs at Fleisher since 2007. She has a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design and a Master of Art Education from Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She is a practicing fiber artist with a focus on embroidery, surface design, and printmaking.
