Who of us doesn't find people fascinating? Art has always looked to the human scene for inspiration. In this course, we create sketches of people going about their lives; from these we derive paintings. Learn to think like Van Gogh, John Sloan, Manet, Edward Hopper and others, who instigated Impressionism and the Ash Can School as ways of returning to an art of their own time. What is our time like? Come try your hand at documenting the human scene in our encouraging atmosphere. Past life-drawing experience will benefit you, but beginners are welcome. Sessions will include sketching trips to the nearby Italian Market, Cianfrani Park, the Art Museum, life models in the studio, and art history encouragement.

What will you learn in this workshop?
1. Learn how to construct a painting, using observation, memory, and imagination.
2. Learn how to use a model to achieve a painting—this differs from how to paint a model.
3. Learn to overcome the fear of the “too-difficult” painting by working from the general to the specific.
4. Get inspired!

  • START THE TERM WITH THESE SUPPLIES:
  • • a pocket sketchbook is required, size 4 x 6 inches *
  • • Graphite pencils 4B, 2H *
  • • Kneadable eraser *
  • • 2-4 tortillons or stumps *

  • For the student looking for a low-cost, and easy set of paints, John suggests any one of the following systems of painting:

  • Acrylic painters will need:
  • • A container for water
  • • Disposable palette *
  • • A palette knife *
  • • A roll of paper towels
  • • Either Canvas, Canvas Board, or Canvas Paper *
  • • Brushes: #10 or #12 flat bristle, #8 flat bristle, #4 round bristle, and a nylon bristle round *
  • • Suggested Color palette: Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue, Cadmium Red Hue, Cobalt Blue Hue, Permanent Green Deep, Ivory Black, Titanium White, Ultramarine, Yellow Ochre. *

  • Oil Painters will need:
  • • A metal palette cup (double) *
  • • Turpenoid *
  • • Linseed oil *
  • • Either Canvas, Canvas Board, or Canvas Paper *
  • • Disposable palette *
  • • A palette knife *
  • • A roll of paper towels
  • • Brushes: #10 or #12 flat bristle, #8 flat bristle, #4 round bristle, and a nylon bristle round *
  • • Suggested Color palette: Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Cadmium Red Hue, Cadmium Yellow Hue, Cobalt Blue Hue, French Ultramarine, Ivory Black, Permanent Green Light, Titanium White, Viridian Hue, Yellow Ochre *
