074 Lasers & Lightsabers
In-Person | Registration opens 8/5/2026 9:00 AM CDT
“Lasers and Lightsabers” shares easy-to-follow stories and photos from working with the world’s most powerful lasers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, including the National Ignition Facility featured on “60 Minutes.” We explore the quest for fusion energy as a replacement for our dependency on fossil fuels. It also covers real-life experiences at George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch, with memorable stories from nearly a decade of visits to the mansion and grounds. We show a little bit of the process of movie making and highlights of the ranch. The presentation highlights other “big science” experiments at the lab, such as the Cassini spacecraft, advanced materials and other research projects. The presentation includes hands-on props like laser targets, supercomputer parts and Aerogel, the world’s lightest manmade material, which attendees can see and hold at the end.
